Palm Sunday 2023
“As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, ‘If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace - but now it is hidden from your eyes. The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.” - Luke 19: 41-44
Question ONE: What steals your peace?
- False Comforts: In the flesh. Even if it meant confinement. We want Egypt again. We want predictability. We want full stomachs.
- Complaints: We don’t want humility, we don’t want accountability. We don’t want the disciplined work of expressing gratitude, we want pity.
- Control: We want to call the shots, we want to know what’s coming next. We want to worship what we can hold in our own hands. We want control.
Question TWO: What brings true peace? (This is a week to gaze upon Jesus)
“The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, whether, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.” - Colossians 1:15-20

Courageous Belief | We are bold in our belief that the Gospel transforms lives. Recognizing that apart from Christ we can do nothing, and acting on His clear call to raise up disciples; a generation of gospel fluent city influencers, we are bold in our proclamation of the Gospel and courageous in our efforts to seek the shalom and flourishing of our cities.
Core Behaviors (We Will):
- Pursue Bible Fluency. We will teach the Bible as the inerrant and infallible and eternal Word of God. We will walk with growing disciples as they become Gospel fluent followers of Jesus. We will identify, train and release evangelists in our community!
- Pursue Bible Relevancy. We will challenge people to grow in the articulation of Biblical worldview as it relates to the current issues of the day. (Alpha, Q Ideas, Rooted.)
- Be Ready and Prepared. We are confident in the One we have in Jesus Christ and our hearts are settled in the reality that Jesus is in charge. We will take time to think through, write out and practice sharing our Gospel story so that we are prepared to respond when people ask us about our work.
- Share the Gospel: WE will seek out opportunities to share the Gospel and not wait for them to come to us. Believing that no one exists beyond the reach of the grace of Jesus Christ to transform lives, we will approach our interactions from a gospel perspective and will be intentional and patient in our relational pursuits.
- Engage with Gentleness, Respect, and Clarity. Jesus models how believers are to engage in relationships with grace and truth. We will listen to the ideas and opinions of other people non-judgmentally and will strive for creativity and sensitivity as we present the hope of the Gospel.

Sacred Relationship | We are committed to healthy, vibrant and family-centered relationships; both with God and with others. We are created in God’s image; designed to thrive in relationship with God and with others. We value healthy and vibrant relationships within our congregation, with visitors, neighbors, and with our city. This health and vibrancy comes from God who has moved towards us at all costs through the person of Jesus. It is our commitment to move towards one another with a similar demonstration of love, courage, grace and humility modeled by Jesus, especially when conflict arises in our relational pursuits. We aim for reconciliation and restorative practice in our relationships, not perfection.
Core Behaviors (We Will):
Pursue Jesus. We will pursue Jesus daily, recognizing that He alone gives us the ability to serve and receive from others. We will seek out and establish time in the Word, prayer and fellowship.
Establish accountable relationships. We will engage each other in the messy details of life, during and apart from our regular gatherings, while receiving and extending grace. We will choose vulnerability over passivity and will speak truth to one another within the context of love, acceptance and forgiveness.
Assume trust. Where there are gaps in information, we will assume trust and approach the appropriate people while asking the right questions to arrive at clarity in a timely manner.
Listen. Our aim in listening is to arrive at understanding, not to prove our point. We will be slow to speak and slow to become angry.
Live generously and pursue interdependency. Understanding that we can’t accomplish very much on our own, we will each carry our portion of the load. We will make generous sacrifices, whenever possible, for the good of our congregation and our community as a whole. These sacrifices are related to our time, talents and / or financial resources.
